“The Netherlands
Flower lovers who flock to the country’s stunning fields of tulips and who have made the colorful Keukenhof gardens one of the most popular attractions in the Netherlands will get an extra treat next year at the Floriade.
The horticultural expo, staged once every 10 years, showcases the world’s best flowers, plants, trees, fruits and vegetables.
“This is a once in a decade flower show so it’s even more spectacular than Keukenhof, and Keukenhof is already amazing,” Banas said.
“It actually runs from April all the way through October, so there’s a pretty wide range of time that you can go and see this.”
The expo is expected to attract 2 million visitors.”

:-) Liked the Floriade horticultural Expo 2012 very much. It was very cold still but it was exiting.
The Venlo Floriade has opened to the public on the 5th of April 2012. During the World Horticultural Exposition until October 7 there are several sustainable pavilions, gardens and buildings to behold by an international audience.
The Floriade Park is 66 acres and includes five “continents” that as areas are separated by wooded strips. Each continent has its own decor, programs and activities.
Innovators
Upon entering the falls by Jo Coenen & Co Architekten designed entrance building Innovators directly to the first highlight of the exhibition. The complex consists of a seventy meter high office area and a long, wavy ‘atrium’.
The seventy meter high office tower consists of twelve floors, the top will serve as exhibition space. The partially integrated atrium and first floor are used as public space for the Floriade. The organization of the horticultural exhibit at the event takes office on the fifth floor.
Floriade is accessible via a 120 meter long pedestrian and cyclist bridge. This building was designed by Edwin Megens (Movares) and Gerard Tools Architect in 24 hours and put in place. The bridge has durable properties: if the bridge is supported by a forest of solid FSC wooden columns. The railing of the bridge is also of this type of wood.
Villa Flora
Villa Flora is the second landmark in the park and is also called the “greenest office building of the Netherlands’. The pavilion was designed by Jón Kristinsson and is articulated in a row located strip-shaped components. The foremost and longest strip is a pergola, which serves as the entrance. Behind a three-and-a-half long strip greenhouse. The shortest strip is the office area.
Through the park are several sustainable gardens landscaped. A striking pavilion in the midst of these gardens is the substrate pavilion, designed by architects Böhtlingk architecture. The bouwwwerk BVB Substrates is a hill and contains a wooden arena with seating which leads to the indoor exhibition space.
Beekeepers Pavilion
The Dutch Beekeepers Association wants with their ‘Be a bee’ pavilion at the Floriade deal with “old fashioned” prejudices about beekeepers. The architects Meier + moor architecture and design made the design for the structure that is based on the shape of a protective bijenkap.
The pavilion is a very distinct white volume that is a steel curtain. Inside the building, visitors will learn more about the perception of the world by turning flowers to smell and to experience life in a beehive is.
Floriade is open until October 7 to be visited. On the website of the World Horticultural Expo you can find all info on all pavilions and gardens. After the exhibition, most of the pavilions at the same location will be used in the newly developing sustainable business Greenpark Venlo
